Healthy Eating: Simple Strategies for Improved Nutrition

Healthy Eating Fresh Fruit

Healthy eating is not about killing yourself to be ultra thin. It's not about strict and complicated nutrition plans that are difficult to follow. And, perhaps most importantly, it is definitely not about depriving yourself of your favorite foods.

Instead, healthy eating is about making smart choices that become sustainable, life-long healthy habits.

Doing so allows you to develop a lean healthy body, enjoy more daily energy and just plain feel great, inside and out. These benefits and more can all be achieved by learning some simple nutrition tips and incorporating them in a way that suits your lifestyle and works for you.

Food is the fuel that runs your body and the proper fuel allows it to operate at peak performance in much the same way that premium gasoline fuels a Mercedes. You want your engines humming and purring not clinking and clacking!

That's why it is so important to eat foods that improve your health and wellness. Your eating habits have a significant impact on your metabolism, energy levels, susceptibility to disease and overall wellness. It is well worth your time and energy to make smart nutritional choices.

Learning to use basic nutritional guidelines and tips can make it simple to not only create, but also maintain a healthy, satisfying diet. (Don't worry, there's still a place for your favorite "comfort foods" as well!)

Healthy Eating Made Simple

Tired of the constant barrage of fad diets that promise to transform the way you look practically overnight? Or magical pills and powders that allow you to eat whatever you want and still lose weight?

The truth is there are no shortcuts when it comes to healthy eating.

Short term strategies may help achieve a short term goal but they have a couple of fatal flaws:

  • They are not based on any nutritional strategies that actually make you healthier. A lot of fad diets and other short term strategies promote a calorie restricted diet and focus only on weight loss and not overall health. Anytime a diet fails to meet minimum nutritional requirements, general health and fitness are put at risk.

The Atkins diet, for example, completely eliminates carbs from your diet. That's crazy! Depriving your body of a vital source of energy (which carbs are) may cause you to lose some weight at first but will most certainly have a negative impact on your overall health in the long run.

  • They do not develop long lasting healthy eating habits. Instead, most diets are goal specific and difficult to maintain making the results temporary. Once the intended goal is reached most dieters resume their old, unhealthy eating habits and a vicious circle is started. According to recent studies over 90% of diets fail to maintain the intended results for longer than one year.

Healthy, long-term weight loss and healthy weight management require a practical nutrition strategy that can be maintained for the rest of your life. If your diet leaves you feeling unsatisfied, alienated or just plain awful it is almost guaranteed to fail.

Despite what the latest fad diets might have you believe everybody must consume a healthy balance of carbohydrates, fat and protein.

These molecules fuel your body, build and repair cells and provide nutrients, minerals and vitamins that are vital to your health.

A better strategy? Focus instead on finding healthy foods that are both enjoyable and nourishing. Developing healthy eating habits while eating foods you enjoy will improve the way you look and feel and will eliminate the vicious dieting circle.

It may take some time and effort on your part to experiment and find healthy foods you love. Embrace the process and have fun with it.

Break out of your comfort zone to expand your range of healthy choices to include a wide variety of delicious foods you love. Do that and you'll never have to diet again.

Healthy Eating Means Eating Smart

Healthy eating is more than just what you eat, it's also how you eat.

Learning some simple strategies for how to eat helps you to get the most out of your healthy food choices. What's more, paying attention to how you eat opens the door to the occasional enjoyment of your favorite foods that may not make your healthy food list.

As you start to create your healthy eating habits keep in mind these simple tips for how to eat:

  • Eat early and often. Starting your day with a healthy breakfast kick starts your metabolism and starts you off on the right foot by providing fuel for energy. Continue to snack and eat small, healthy meals throughout the day as much as possible. If you can, try to eat every 2-3 hours. Doing so helps to curb your appetite and prevent overeating. It also helps your body to better absorb and utilize the nutrients and vitamins you consume.
  • Eat slowly. Take your time and enjoy your food. Eating slowly allows your body to recognize when it is full and prevents overeating. Besides, believe it or not even healthy food is enjoyable so take your time and enjoy it!
  • Eat what you want on weekends. This is a simple way to enjoy your favorite foods without feeling guilty. I plan out my meals during the week to primarily consist of healthy nutritional choices. Come the weekend I loosen up and allow myself to splurge a little. Managing my food choices this way ensures that the majority of the time I am eating healthy and that's really the bottom line.

You can set up your system however you like, just aim to make healthy choices about 90% of the time. For example, if sugar is your thing, perhaps you allow yourself a small dessert each day after dinner but cut out sugar the rest of the day. You get the picture.

  • Cook your own food whenever possible. Cooking your own food gives you ultimate control of what you eat. Many foods you get when ordering out have hidden calories that can easily pack on pounds even when you think you're making a healthy choice. Healthy foods may also be prepared with fattening oils and other ingredients that you're unaware of. Cooking your own food puts the control back on your plate.
  • Leave some food on your plate. Portions in today's world have ballooned out of control. It's not uncommon for restaurants to serve meals that contain nearly all of the calories you need for the entire day! Unless you're trying to pack on some serious pounds there's no need to finish everything you're served. Next time you go out, eat until you're full and don't be afraid to leave a little food on your plate.

As with just about everything in life the key to sustainable healthy eating habits is balance.

The majority of your food choices should have a positive nutritional impact. But don't go crazy.

Allow yourself to satisfy your devilishly delicious cravings from time to time. Always remember the big picture goal: develop easy to maintain, life-long healthy eating habits.
